Pi Network was founded by a team of Stanford University graduates and faculty members, including Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis (Head of Technology) and Dr. Chengdiao Fan (Head of Community). The founding team combined expertise in distributed systems, cryptography, and behavioral economics. Before Pi, the team built 'Social Bitcoin' experiments at Stanford, laying the groundwork for mobile-based cryptocurrency participation.

Pi Network launched its beta testnet in March 2019, allowing users to start mobile mining. The project reached 1 million pioneers by its first anniversary. Mainnet was launched in December 2021 with full node migration beginning in 2022. Pi completed its KYC (Know Your Customer) solution rollout in 2023, enabling verified users to withdraw tokens. The network continues to expand its ecosystem with Enclosed Network phase applications.

Pi Network utilizes a unique Proof of Contribution (PoC) consensus mechanism, different from traditional Proof of Work or Proof of Stake. The protocol verifies users' real-world contributions through three verification methods: mobile usage, sanity checks, and信任网关. The blockchain supports smart contracts and is designed to be energy-efficient since mining does not require computational puzzles or stake deposits.

PI has a maximum supply of 100 billion tokens, with no coins pre-mined or sold in any token sales. The token distribution is allocated as follows: 65% to community rewards (mining incentives), 15% to early contributors (founding team and advisors), 10% to ecosystem fund, and 10% to strategic reserve. All tokens are earned through user participation rather than purchased.

Pi Network is governed by its on-chain Constitution adopted by majority vote of pioneers. The governance structure includes a Security Circle mechanism where users build trust networks, and a multi-tier governance system featuring Committee and Node roles. As the network transitions to Open Network, governance power will be progressively decentralized to the broader community of token holders.

PI serves as the primary medium of exchange within the Pi Network ecosystem, enabling peer-to-peer transactions and payments. The ecosystem includes the Pi Browser for decentralized applications, Pi Wallet for token storage, and the Developer Platform for third-party app integration. Use cases range from commerce and services to DeFi applications, with merchants increasingly adopting PI for goods and services.
