Google is rolling out its age recognition tool for Android apps to more markets. According to the latest schedule, this feature, called the Play Signal API, will first launch in Australia and Canada in mid-August, and will expand globally by the end of the year.

Regulatory pressure drives expansion

This tool has already been launched in Brazil. Google hopes developers will use it to identify younger users in their apps and provide more age-appropriate content and user experiences. This move is also related to increasing regulatory requirements for protecting minors online in many parts of the world.

Recently, legislative bodies and regulatory authorities in multiple markets have been continuously demanding that app stores strengthen their protection of minors. Apple also launched an age verification tool globally in February of this year to address the increasing legal requirements.

Do not provide birthday information directly

According to Google's design, developers obtain users' age ranges, not specific birthdays or other personal information. Parents can share their children's age ranges with the app, and adults can also proactively share their age information when prompted by the developer.

Google says this approach allows apps to adjust content presentation and user experience to suit different age groups without having access to sensitive personal information.

Family Link Unified Management

In terms of operation, parents do not need to set sharing permissions for each app individually. Google centralizes the relevant controls in the Family Link parental control panel. After parents complete the settings, developers who integrate this feature can read signals for the corresponding age range.

This feature will also work in conjunction with Google Play's existing child protection tools, including restricting children's access to certain apps. Parents can still manage screen time, approve app downloads, and set up PIN-based content filtering for specific apps through Family Link.
