Florida plans to redirect nearly $200 million of federal funding originally earmarked for electric vehicle charging networks to the construction of electric air taxi infrastructure. Local officials believe that private companies have already deployed enough charging facilities throughout the state, thus justifying the repurposing of the funds.

32 take-off and landing points to be built

According to the Miami Herald, the funding comes from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, part of a bipartisan infrastructure bill. The Florida Department of Transportation stated that it plans to use the funds to build 32 landing sites and provide charging facilities for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Florida has one of the highest numbers of electric vehicles in the U.S., but its number of charging stations per vehicle is still below the national average. The state government had previously refrained from using this federal funding, arguing that the market had already largely taken on the responsibility of building the charging network.

Policy interpretation has been adjusted.

According to the updated project guidelines from the Trump administration, if a state’s electric vehicle charging corridor has been designated as “essentially complete,” the state government can reallocate related funds to electric transportation infrastructure on any public roads or other publicly accessible locations.

This adjustment provides Florida with policy space to invest in air taxi networks. In contrast, states like New York and North Carolina continue to use such funds for community charging infrastructure, focusing on renters and residents without assigned parking spaces.

eVTOL commercialization is still in its early stages.

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) aircraft are still in the early stages of the market. While several startups are working on mass-production models, the industry as a whole has not yet formed a mature commercial network, and some companies are beginning to shift their focus to defense applications.

The Florida Department of Transportation hopes that these small aircraft, which can typically carry four to five passengers, will alleviate the long-standing traffic congestion problem in the area. This change in funding allocation also indicates that Florida has chosen an infrastructure development strategy that leans more towards electric vehicle charging than towards new air mobility solutions.
