Strategy's latest disclosure shows that, affected by the decline in Bitcoin prices, the company recorded a net loss of $8.2 billion in the second quarter, almost entirely due to unrealized write-downs of its Bitcoin holdings at fair value. As the publicly traded company holding the most Bitcoin globally, Strategy's financial performance is once again directly linked to cryptocurrency price fluctuations.

Bitcoin write-down drags down quarterly results

The company stated that the primary source of the quarterly loss was the unrealized impairment of $8.32 billion in Bitcoin, rather than a significant deterioration in operating cash flow. As of July 26, Strategy held 843,775 Bitcoins, a 25% increase from the beginning of the year. At current prices, this holding is worth approximately $54.8 billion, below its cumulative purchase cost of $63.7 billion.

This means that, despite the company continuing to expand its Bitcoin reserves, under current accounting practices, a drop in Bitcoin prices will be quickly reflected in the profit and loss statement, amplifying quarterly performance volatility.

It has raised over $17 billion this year.

As investors continue to scrutinize its capital structure, Strategy also disclosed its financing and debt adjustments this year. The company stated that it has raised $17.06 billion through equity offerings and repurchased $1.5 billion in convertible bonds at a discount of approximately 8% this year.

  • Equity financing this year: US$17.06 billion
  • Convertible bond repurchase scale: US$1.5 billion
  • US dollar reserves: $3.75 billion

Meanwhile, the company's dollar reserves have increased to $3.75 billion. Chief Financial Officer Andrew Kang stated that these reserves are sufficient to cover existing preferred stock dividends and interest expenses for over 2.1 years. With preferred stock, common stock, and convertible bonds operating concurrently, market attention is also increasing regarding the sustainability of its financing structure.

Start selling some Bitcoin to replenish cash

The company also disclosed that it has sold approximately $218.4 million worth of Bitcoin through a new Bitcoin monetization program to bolster its cash position and help pay preferred stock dividends. This move differs from its past long-standing "buy-only" Bitcoin strategy.

Executive Chairman Michael Saylor stated that the company will continue to advance its so-called "digital lending" business, even with the current weak sentiment in the Bitcoin market. According to him, Strategy is attempting to build new business lines and asset class narratives beyond cryptocurrency holdings.

Additional information:Strategy remains the publicly traded company with the largest holdings of Bitcoin globally, and its financial reports and financing activities are often seen by the market as an important indicator of corporate Bitcoin treasury models.
