According to CoinMeta, China Business Daily warned on July 30th that scammers were impersonating the newspaper to demand Bitcoin from businesses, threatening to publish negative news. The scammers contacted the businesses through an address hosted by Proton Mail, claiming to have damaging information about the target companies. The senders threatened that they would publish the so-called investigation results unless the businesses transferred Bitcoin. The newspaper stated that it had not authorized this information and considered it a suspicious scam. The newspaper said that the scammers claimed to be representatives of the newspaper and offered to suppress the alleged investigation in exchange for Bitcoin. The newspaper is collecting evidence and reserves the right to pursue civil and criminal liability against those responsible.
