IRS Warning: Scammers Use Fake Letters to Steal Cryptocurrency Assets

According to CoinMeta, the Criminal Investigations Division of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the United States has warned that scammers are impersonating the IRS to steal assets from cryptocurrency wallets and personal identification information by forging letters. The fraudulent letters contain QR codes that direct recipients to fake websites, where they are urged to register for a non-existent “Digital Assets Compliance Portal” before a deadline and to enter their personal information. The head of the IRS Criminal Investigations division, Jarod Koopman, stated that criminals are taking advantage of the public’s trust in government agencies to carry out these scams. The infrastructure for this fraudulent activity was set up just a few days before the letters were sent; the domain names were registered through a Hong Kong registrar, and the fake websites were hosted on networks in Romania.
