US-Japan collaboration to support the yen; currency market intervention may enter a new normal

According to CoinMeta, the United States' support for Japan's efforts to stabilize the yen is deepening, with the degree of coordination between the two countries in the foreign exchange market reaching a level not seen in decades. On Thursday, Japan is suspected to have bought yen, with the scale estimated at around $53 billion. At the same time, U.S. authorities conducted "exchange rate inquiries" with banks, which the market viewed as a precursor to intervention in the currency market. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated that the yen is "seriously undervalued," and excessive volatility is not healthy. Nobuyasu Atago, chief economist at Lotte Securities Economic Research Institute and former official of the Bank of Japan, said, "Yellen's influence is very important. The United States is now becoming more cooperative with Japan's intervention efforts." The timing of the actions on Thursday also caught the market's attention, as they occurred between interest rate decisions by the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan, leading to speculation that monetary policy may also be part of the coordination between Tokyo and Washington. On Friday, Japanese officials remained vague about whether intervention would be carried out, but they clearly emphasized the coordinated support from the United States. Jun Mitamura, the top official in Japan's Ministry of Finance responsible for exchange rate affairs, said that the United States provided more than just "moral support." Atago remarked, "I can't help but think that they are considering not only coordination in terms of exchange rates but also tacit cooperation at the monetary policy level as well."
