According to CoinMeta, Thinking Machines Lab, previously founded by OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, has released a new model called Inkling-Small and made its full weights available to the public. This is a multi-modal reasoning model that supports text, image, and audio inputs and uses the Apache 2.0 license. Inkling-Small has a total of 276 billion parameters, with 12 billion activated at a time, while Inkling has 975 billion total parameters, with 41 billion activated. Thinking Machines has proposed a phased open-source approach, where the model is first provided to defense agencies through a restricted API, before gradually opening it up for monitored use and fine-tuning. The team believes that making the weights public will not increase any substantial risks and is currently working on removing dangerous knowledge from the training data to preserve the model's general capabilities.
