According to CoinMeta, and as reported by the Financial Times, the U.S. Treasury Department intervened on Friday to support the Japanese yen, marking the first time in a decade that Washington has purchased yen. This intervention occurred as the yen exchange rate approached a 40-year low. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York sold euros on behalf of the Treasury Department through Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley in exchange for yen. On Friday, the Treasury Department notified several banks that it might intervene in the yen market and asked them to be "ready to take action in the future." A note from Treasury Secretary Scott Branson during a cabinet meeting listed "to-do items," including "purchasing yen ($5-10 billion JPY)." The Treasury Department has not yet responded to this report or the photo of the note. Japan and the United States may announce policies earlier next week to address the weak yen, with the aim of warning against speculative bets and stabilizing the market.
