Italian Central Bank Study: Stablecoins May Not Be Cheaper for Remittances
2026-08-02 00:04:12
According to CoinMeta, a study by the Italian Central Bank indicates that the cost advantage of stablecoins in remittances is not significant. Although stablecoins are promoted as a breakthrough application for cross-border payments, promising nearly instant transfers at lower fees than traditional remittance service providers, the study found that the actual costs of stablecoin transfers are not systematically lower than those of traditional remittances. The study covered 10 international remittance channels and found that the transfer fees for stablecoins, across the entire process from bank accounts to cryptocurrency wallets to local currencies, vary greatly, ranging from 0.3% to 9%. The study also pointed out that the advantages of stablecoins lie in their availability for settlement at any time and their programmability, but in practical applications, users often need to convert stablecoins into local currencies, which introduces additional intermediaries and fees.
