China's tourism price war threatens highlights of the consumer market

According to CoinMeta, the domestic tourism market in China is accelerating its decline, threatening one of the few bright spots in the consumer economy. Hilton China stated last week that it expects revenue per available room (RevPAR) this year to fall by a single digit, below the initial expectation of a flat performance at the beginning of the year. The group's RevPAR growth rate shifted from 1.3% in the first quarter to a decline of 2.2% in the second quarter. Data shows that as of the end of July, hotel RevPAR in China decreased by 6% year-on-year, while in June it fell by 1%. Despite the sluggish domestic tourism market, inbound tourism is becoming a source of hope for the industry. Thanks to China's relaxation of visa requirements for tourists from more and more countries, visitors from high-per capita-income economies are flooding in.
