According to CoinMeta, Zhao Changpeng, the founder of Binance, responded to data indicating that from a statistical perspective, storing cryptocurrencies on exchanges is safer than using self-hosted wallets. Data shows that self-hosted wallets have lost approximately 1.57 million coins in total, while exchanges have lost about 1.51 million coins in total. Zhao Changpeng pointed out that it is easier to collect data on hacker attacks on exchanges, while it is more difficult to quantify data losses from self-hosted wallets. Moreover, exchange data can be affected by platforms that have closed down, and exchanges like Binance compensate in full for hacker attacks on their platforms. Zhao Changpeng emphasized that different methods carry different risk characteristics and are suitable for different groups of people, and a balanced approach is more prudent.
