Ledger CTO: Multiple signatures are not always the best choice
2026-08-04 16:14:54
According to CoinMeta, Ledger Chief Technology Officer Charles Guillemet stated that Bitcoin users should not rush to adopt multi-signature wallets as a response to the Coldcard incident. He believes that complex setups may introduce additional risks and recommends that users opt for the “Miniscript” solution, which provides security without complicating things. He pointed out that multi-signature wallets make recovery and management more difficult, and many configurations created by users are hard to securely recover. Guillemet mentioned that the Ledger implementation of Miniscript supports “clear signatures,” allowing users to verify transactions on hardware wallets. He also mentioned Musig2 as an encrypted alternative to traditional multi-signature wallets, stating that Ledger hardware wallets are the only devices that support Musig2. Despite these alternatives, Guillemet emphasized that multi-signature wallets are still suitable for certain users, and security decisions should be based on individual threat models, rather than reactions to recent headlines. He noted that properly backed-up single-signature hardware wallets remain the most practical choice.
