Bobcat Acquisition Only Includes 3-Month Health Insurance; 62-Year-Olds Collecting Social Security Early May Result in Losses

According to CoinMeta, the acquisition package for Bobcat only includes health insurance for a period of 3 months. For an employee who is 62 years old, claiming social security benefits early to fill this gap could backfire. Claiming social security benefits at 62 would result in a permanent 30% reduction in benefits, turning a monthly check of $2,400 into $1,680. Social security income is included in the market-adjusted total income (MAGI), so claiming benefits early to pay for insurance premiums could also reduce the tax deductions associated with those premiums. In contrast, withdrawals from a Roth account and cash savings are generally not included in MAGI, making it a smarter option to cover the 33-month gap before the start of Medicare.
