Under the proposal, which has been discussed for several days between Iran and Oman, vessels entering the strait will use the route closest to Iran under the coordination of Tehran, and when departing, they will use the route closest to Oman, with coordination handled by Muscat. The proposal also eliminates the need for transit fees or service charges for crossing this critical waterway, which has been a major point of contention in multiple talks between the United States, Iran, and mediators. If the proposal is approved, the United States and Iran will return to the negotiating table in accordance with the terms stipulated in the memorandum of understanding signed in June, which requires free passage for vessels through the strait within 60 days.
