According to CoinMeta, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts requested on Wednesday that Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick explain the Trump administration's decision to relax export controls on the UAE in July, following which entities related to the UAE had invested hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency projects owned by the Trump family. In her letter, Warren asked the Department of Commerce to provide a national security analysis and to disclose whether the Department of Defense, State Department, or Department of Energy were concerned about sensitive U.S. technology being transferred to China or Iran. She pointed out that the Department of Commerce's actions raised significant questions regarding the potential impact of the president's cryptocurrency business interests on national security. Warren's inquiry focused on Tahnoon Ben Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's national security advisor, who invested $500 million in World Free Finance, a company affiliated with the Trump family, and also held a seat on its board of directors. Last month, the Department of Commerce reclassified the UAE as part of a more lenient export control category, allowing certain sensitive products to be transported under broad exemptions.
