Minneapolis Fed Chair Kashkari Calls for Gradual Interest Rate Hikes by 2026
2026-08-05 21:52:18
According to CoinMeta, Minneapolis Federal Reserve Chairman Neel Kashkari stated in a Wednesday interview that central banks should begin to raise interest rates gradually, arguing that waiting could lead to a more severe tightening cycle. He supports starting rate hikes as early as September, pointing out that current monetary policy has not significantly restricted the economy, and emphasized the need for small steps to address inflation. Kashkari and two other regional Federal Reserve chairmen opposed last week's decision by the Federal Open Market Committee to raise interest rates by 25 basis points. The remaining nine members of the committee decided to keep the benchmark federal funds rate between 3.5% and 3.75% unchanged. He mentioned strong corporate profits and stable consumers, believing that monetary policy has not yet sufficiently restricted inflation, and pointed to a series of supply shocks, including tariff-driven commodity prices and spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, as pressures that monetary policy needs to address. The market generally expects a rate hike in September, with the likelihood of one in October also increasing.
