Bitcoin ETF Attracts $620 Million in Funds After Cold Wallet Vulnerability
2026-08-06 23:25:23
According to CoinMeta, a security vulnerability in cold wallet devices resulted in investors losing 1800 BTC, which triggered an emergency migration of funds to Wall Street. The US spot Bitcoin ETF market attracted a net inflow of $620 million in just a few days. A senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg, Eric Balchunas, pointed out that after the incident, funds such as IBIT and FBTC were receiving new capital every day, indicating "excellent cash inflows after a difficult summer." The vulnerability stemmed from a technical defect in firmware released by a Canadian Coinkite company in 2021, which caused cold wallet devices to ignore their built-in random number generators and produce predictable mnemonic phrases. As a result, hackers were able to calculate private keys and remotely extract funds from thousands of addresses, with total losses exceeding $116 million.
