According to CoinMeta, SK Hynix announced that it will invest 54 trillion Korean won (approximately $3.81 billion) to build two new memory chip manufacturing plants to meet the growing demand. The company stated on Friday that it will build a wafer plant named “Y2” in龍仁, with an investment of 35.2 trillion Korean won, and at the same time build a facility named “M17” in Cheongju, with an investment of 19.1 trillion Korean won. The surge in memory prices is mainly due to a shortage of supply and a huge demand for AI infrastructure, especially from companies such as NVIDIA. SK Hynix said that Y2 will serve as a production base for dynamic random access memory (DRAM), with construction expected to begin in July 2027, and the first clean room to be put into operation in June 2029, producing high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and other next-generation DRAM products. The Cheongju M17 plant is expected to start construction in February 2027, with the first clean room to be put into operation in December 2028.
