Weak non-farm data drives a surge in the Japanese yen; traders are concerned about the risk of intervention
2026-08-07 21:14:50
According to CoinMeta, on Friday, due to unexpectedly weak U.S. non-farm payroll data, the Japanese yen strengthened significantly against the U.S. dollar, with the dollar falling by 1.1% to around 156.68 against the yen, far below the 40-year high of 163.99 set in July. Traders are closely watching the possibility of the Japanese government intervening in the market again. Lee Hardman, a senior currency analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ, stated that the significantly lower-than-expected non-farm payroll data indicates that a weakening of the dollar is justified. The current exchange rate fluctuations seem to be driven by fundamental factors, and the market is expected to react noticeably, with widespread selling of the dollar to follow.
