According to CoinMeta, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) announced on August 6th the acquisition of startup Taalas based in Toronto, which specializes in building chips for AI inference. This acquisition is aimed at enhancing AMD's competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence, although it will not have an immediate impact on AMD's revenue in the short term. AMD's stock price has more than doubled in 2026, and its data center business has grown rapidly. Taalas's chips use a method that directly engraves the weights of a single AI model into the silicon wafer, allowing them to save approximately 90% of power consumption compared to Nvidia's chips. This move marks a strategic shift for AMD in the AI chip market, and in the future, these chips will be used in conjunction with its Instinct GPU and Epyc processors.
