US Senator issues an 'ultimatum' to AI giant: halt development, or Congress will take action

According to CoinMeta, as reported by Axios, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has issued a ultimatum to the CEO of the leading AI company, demanding a pause in the development of AI. The senator warned that if no action is taken, Congress will intervene. This letter has been sent to OpenAI founder Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, and Zuckerberg. Sanders stated: "At a time when we have seen humanity lose control and create potentially dangerous viruses, your companies are still competing to advance—investing billions of dollars in a technology that no one can fully understand, predict, or control." However, AI legislation, especially efforts led by progressives like Sanders, is unlikely to gain enough support to become law in this Congress. What can be anticipated for now are symbolic resolutions and public pressure campaigns; however, if Democrats regain control of either house of Congress, there may be congressional investigations and subpoenas to hold tech CEO accountable.
