According to CoinMeta, Bybit has filed a civil lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Federal District of Columbia, accusing North Korea, the North Korean General Intelligence Bureau, and the hacking group Lazarus Group of a theft incident involving approximately $1.5 billion in February 2025. The judge has approved a preliminary injunction prohibiting the transfer or disposition of the identified stolen assets during the trial period and believes that Bybit has a higher likelihood of winning on the substantive issues. The lawsuit also lists unknown individuals and entities that hold or transfer the relevant funds as defendants. Bybit disclosed that about $48.4 million has been recovered, and approximately $30.5 million has been frozen in over 28 exchanges and custodian institutions, totaling about 5% of the stolen amount. In February 2025, the attackers transferred about 500,000 ETH from Bybit's cold wallet, and most of the funds were subsequently exchanged for Bitcoin through coin mixing services before being transferred. The case is being pursued in parallel with criminal investigations.
