Sanders demands that the three leaders of AI pause the development of AI
2026-08-10 17:29:22
According to CoinMeta, Senator Sanders sent an open letter to the three leaders of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, requesting a pause in the development of AI. He pointed out that the three companies had previously stated that development should be halted if the models could not be safely controlled, and believed that the red line had now been crossed. Sanders mentioned recent abnormalities in model security tests, as well as the use of AI in the design of new viruses, arguing that continuing the race to develop such models posed too high a risk. He warned that if the three companies did not take action voluntarily, the U.S. Senate would intervene. However, it is highly unlikely that the three companies will actually stop developing. OpenAI plans to raise security standards and continue development, Anthropic supports a pause under extreme circumstances, but emphasizes that it requires joint action by multiple companies. Meta has already changed its rules for the highest-risk scenarios to "continue development after taking mitigatory measures." Sanders' political pressure is unlikely to lead to a complete pause in the short term, as the Republican Party currently controls the Senate, and the Trump administration also advocates for accelerating the development of AI.
