Pi Reconstructs Agent Execution Layer: Long-term tasks are moving towards persistent operation
2026-08-11 18:08:27
According to CoinMeta, Pi is working on redoing agent and harness. The latest harness and v3 specifications have been completed and are now in the final audit phase. This version has reworked the task execution and storage mechanisms, allowing agent to continue from where it was left off in case of process crashes or during harness upgrades. Pi is an open-source project created by Mario Zechner, which became popular due to its use by OpenClaw and was acquired by Earendil this year. Mario continues to be responsible for its development. Currently, there are over 60,000 star instances of Pi on GitHub. The latest code for Minimax is built upon OpenCode and Pi. The v3 version has restructured the underlying architecture; before making model requests and tool calls, the execution status is saved, and the results are written after completion. Upon restart, Pi can recognize tasks that have been completed, can be rerun, or cannot be executed due to side effects. Conversations, running status, and token costs are saved separately, with cross-version status migration also implemented. v3 and Codex are working on enabling agent to execute tasks for longer periods, and OpenAI is also researching how to allow Codex to continuously perform long-duration tasks.
