According to CoinMeta, Coinbase ( COIN ) announced the establishment of an international tokenization center in Abu Dhabi to provide a regulatory foundation for the listing of traditional securities on the blockchain outside of the United States. The company stated on Tuesday that it has obtained a financial services license from the Abu Dhabi Global Markets ( ADGM ) Financial Services Regulatory Authority ( FSRA ), allowing it to arrange investment transactions. Coinbase plans to use this license to offer digitally secured securities backed by underlying stocks, with tokens to be registered and issued under the supervision of FSRA in ADGM. This move comes at a time when tokenization is gaining increasing attention in traditional finance, with global asset management companies and banks transferring funds, bonds, private credit, and stocks onto the blockchain. Supporters believe that this technology can make securities more easily transferable around the clock, enable nearly instant settlement of transactions, and ultimately be used as collateral in on-chain markets. Abu Dhabi has positioned itself as a key testing ground for this movement. Since 2018, ADGM has introduced a regulatory framework for virtual assets and has attracted crypto and tokenization companies seeking to establish a regulatory foundation in the region.
