NYPD Investigates Gold Scam Case, with Losses Exceeding 100 Million US Dollars

According to CoinMeta, the New York Police Department is investigating a gold fraud case in which victims lost over $100 million in total. This fraud primarily targeted elderly individuals, turning gold, a traditional symbol of financial security, into a tool for criminals to steal retirement pensions. The investigation began in May 2024 and involved law enforcement agencies from NYPD, the Department of Homeland Security, the Internal Revenue Service, and other states, as the fraud was not limited to New York. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has also warned about similar "gold delivery" scams. A report from the Internet Crime Complaint Center in 2024 indicated that there were 525 complaints involving the delivery of gold and precious metals, resulting in a total loss of $219 million. Victims usually receive pop-up alerts stating that their devices or financial accounts have been compromised, and are then directed to make calls. Those who answer pretend to be technical support personnel, thereby gaining remote access to the victims' accounts.
