According to CoinMeta, the Coreum cross-chain bridge that connects to XRP Ledger was attacked by a security vulnerability on August 9th, resulting in a loss of approximately 199,916 XRP in less than two hours. The balance within the bridge plummeted from around 200,410 XRP to just 493.5 XRP. Investigations revealed that this attack did not involve any vulnerabilities in XRPL itself or the leakage of private keys; instead, the attackers exploited a flaw in the deposit verification logic of the bridge's relayer. On-chain analysis showed that the attackers completed the transfer of funds through 94 multi-signature authorized payment transactions within 97 minutes. Since this multi-signature mechanism requires the signatures of 17 out of 28 relay keys, the attackers successfully deceived the consensus mechanism and approved a large number of illegal transactions in succession. As of August 11th, the Coreum cross-chain bridge is still in a suspended state.
