Codelco Abandons Copper Production Growth Targets, Mine Projects Face Successive Setbacks
2026-08-13 06:31:48
According to CoinMeta, Chile's state-owned mining company Codelco is expected to see a decline in copper production this year due to setbacks at its mines and projects. Last year, Codelco lost its title as the world's largest copper supplier to BHP Billiton Group. In April of this year, Codelco announced a plan to increase this year's copper production from 1.307 million tons (after last year's revision) to 1.34 million tons, but it has now actually abandoned this plan. If the company experiences another annual decline in production, it will put even more pressure on its already sluggish output and soaring debt levels. With the surge in demand for copper from data centers and electric vehicles, as well as the increasing difficulty and cost of copper mining, Codelco's efforts to reform its outdated operations have had little effect, reflecting the broader challenges faced by the entire industry.
