According to CoinMeta, and as reported by foreign media, foreign companies have invested a total of 6 trillion yen (about 37 billion US dollars) in Japan's chip industry. This figure has further increased with recent announcements by Sony Group and TSMC to build image sensor factories. TSMC has invested 3 trillion yen in its two wafer factories in Japan; the first factory began mass-producing logic chips in 2024, and the second is currently under construction. Micron Technology launched an expansion project at its factory in Hiroshima Prefecture last month, planning to invest 1.5 trillion yen in the production of advanced memory chips, which are crucial for artificial intelligence data centers. Also in July, Israeli chip manufacturer Tower Sem announced that it would invest 600 billion yen in the mass production of optical communication device chips used in data centers.
