Vitalik Buterin: Ethereum's Current Expansion Strategy Combined with the Bitcoin UTXO Model
2026-08-17 12:44:51
According to CoinMeta, co-founder Vitalik Buterin praised the contributions of Bitcoin developers to Utreexo on August 16 and described an extension direction for Ethereum that combines the state of UTXO style with traditional dynamic states. He stated that the current Ethereum extension strategy is still under development, with the goal of allowing most Ethereum activities to expand further without sacrificing decentralization and resistance to censorship. Buterin emphasized that this does not mean Ethereum will replace its account model with Bitcoin’s UTXO architecture; the related design is still a research proposal rather than an approved protocol change. Utreexo was proposed in 2019 by Thaddeus Dryja, a researcher at the MIT cryptocurrency initiative, with the aim of representing Bitcoin’s UTXO set through a compact hash accumulator, rather than requiring verification nodes to locally store the complete UTXO set. This design addresses a widespread issue that Ethereum researchers are working on: increasing network activity without forcing state storage requirements to rise at the same speed.
