According to CoinMeta, Apple has fixed a critical screen sharing vulnerability (identified by the code macOS). Attackers could exploit this vulnerability to gain elevated privileges (root) and install Monero mining software. On August 12, the Dutch National Cybersecurity Center (NCSC) updated its warnings, confirming that there were active exploits of this vulnerability on multiple systems, especially on devices with port 5900 exposed to the internet. Apple patched this vulnerability in its update on August 6; it was described as an authentication flaw that potentially allowed attackers to access screen sharing features without valid credentials. Security firm Huntress discovered that this flaw affected the secure remote password authentication process for screen sharing, allowing attackers to make unauthenticated connections appear as authenticated. Researcher Huntress from Ryan Dowd stated that Censys scans identified "tens of thousands of potentially vulnerable hosts," with the risk associated particularly with hosted bare-metal servers (Mac). This vulnerability was rated with a high severity score of 9.8 on the CISA vulnerability assessment scale and did not require any special privileges or user interaction to be exploited.
