Gold prices rise due to weak retail sales data
2026-08-17 22:05:25
According to CoinMeta, on August 17, 2026, the price of gold futures opened at $4,440 per ounce on Monday, up 0.1% from the closing price of last Friday. The gold price remained at $4,440.10 per ounce this morning, recording a weekly increase of 2.4% at the start of the week. Weak U.S. economic data and a weakening dollar were the main reasons for this. Retail sales in July declined by 0.6%, whereas analysts had expected a 0.1% increase. Consumer confidence also fell after two months of growth; a survey by the University of Michigan showed that the confidence index dropped by 8% in August. Weak economic data reduces the risk of interest rate hikes in the short term, which could support gold prices.
