A retired elderly person in Hong Kong fell victim to a fake crypto investment scam, losing over HK$5 million

According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Hong Kong 01, an elderly retiree in their 80s fell victim to a fake crypto investment scam. Over a period of about one and a half months, they transferred more than HKD 5 million (approximately USD 640,000) worth of ETH to the fraudsters' designated wallets multiple times. The victim had previously downloaded a counterfeit Trust Wallet investment app through online advertisements and, under the inducement of so-called customer service, continued to invest funds until they were unable to withdraw money and the scammers disappeared without a trace, at which point they reported the case to the police.
