Global supply tensions intensify, with diesel profit margins in the US exceeding $100

According to CoinMeta, as global supply tensions intensify, the profit margin for processing crude oil into diesel in the United States has soared to over $100 per barrel, setting a new historical high. This closely watched indicator, known as the diesel crack spread, hovered around $100 per barrel on Tuesday, slightly below its previous record high of over $102. For the first time, this indicator closed above $100 on Monday. Prior to this year, it had never exceeded $89 per barrel. The previous record was set in October 2022, when the world was facing a diesel supply shortage and was about to enter the first winter following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Now, a combination of factors has created an almost "perfect storm" that has pushed diesel prices up again and may lead to higher heating costs this winter, as well as bringing new inflationary pressures.
