According to CoinMeta, Falcon 9 rocket SpaceX impacted the moon on August 5, 2026. The lunar orbit probe LRO from NASA recorded the aftermath of the impact, revealing a new crater about 60 feet wide and less than 10 feet deep. NASA stated that the rocket had been in space since its launch in January 2025 and eventually returned to the moon due to solar activity and gravitational forces. LRO took photographs of the impact site between August 11th and 12th, observing light and dark rays produced by the impact; the dark material consisted of surface dust and rocks that had been exposed to the solar wind and cosmic rays for a long time. The observations from this impact demonstrate how existing lunar spacecraft can be used to study unexpected impacts and enhance our understanding of the interactions between fragments on the lunar surface.
