Coldcard Releases Firmware Update; Users Required to Migrate Bitcoin to New Wallets
2026-08-21 03:15:08
According to CoinMeta, Coldcard has released firmware versions 5.6.1 and 1.5.1q, requiring affected users to migrate their Bitcoin to new wallets. This update was released after a three-week security review. Coldcard warns that affected users must create new wallets and transfer their Bitcoin. This update addresses a flaw in certain firmware versions regarding the generation of wallet seed phrases. Coldcard states that the new firmware versions require that each new seed phrase must obtain at least one random source directly from the device owner. Users can provide randomness through at least 65 unpredictable key presses, 50 private rolls of a physical six-sided die, or 128 physical coin tosses. Coldcard also adds phased verification for some signed Bitcoin transactions to ensure they are reviewed before signing.
