Hungary repeals verification requirements for the conversion of crypto assets, cancels maximum prison sentences of up to 8 years

According to CoinMeta, the Hungarian Parliament passed Act No. xxxviii of 2026, which abolishes verification requirements related to cryptocurrency asset conversion services and repeals penalties of up to 5 years in prison for unauthorized trading of high-value cryptocurrencies and up to 8 years in prison for violations of verification obligations, in order to align with the EU MICA framework. The act was voted through on July 31 and came into effect on August 7.
