According to CoinMeta, the UK’s Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs has issued 81,000 warning letters to cryptocurrency investors in the past 12 months, a 25% increase from approximately 65,000 letters in the previous year. The exchange of cryptocurrencies, using tokens to purchase goods or services, and gifting tokens can all constitute taxable dispositions, and income from lending and staking may be subject to income tax rules. Rules implemented in April 2027 will treat crypto lending and automated market-making arrangements as having no gain or loss, which is expected to affect 700,000 people. The crypto asset reporting framework requires service providers to submit transaction data for 2026, and it is anticipated that 52 jurisdictions will exchange data in 2027, with an additional 15 joining in 2028.
