According to CoinMeta, and as reported by The New York Times, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer disclosed on Saturday a trade deal proposed to Canada, stating that these measures would grant Canada the most favorable trade treatment. Lighthizer stated that the Trump administration pledged to eliminate the 10% tariff on corkwood imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Act and proposed to reduce automobile tariffs by 25%, with the possibility of lowering them to 7%. The United States also plans to reduce metal tariffs, proposing to cut most steel tariffs from 50% to 25% for Canadian exports to the U.S., and aluminum tariffs to 25% as well, without setting quota restrictions. For downstream products that use steel and aluminum as raw materials, tariffs will be reduced by 10 to 25 percentage points, with a minimum reduction of 15%. In addition, the Trump administration originally planned to suspend the 50% tariffs on Canadian dairy products, wine, and other goods. Lighthizer countered Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's claim that "the U.S. is asking for too much and offering too little," stating that the U.S. proposal will continue to provide the best market access conditions.
