Gravity Team CEO: Stablecoin payments are fast, but local currency settlement remains a bottleneck
2026-08-24 23:21:52
According to CoinMeta, Gravity Team CEO Mā rti ņš Be ņķī tis stated in an interview with Crypto.News that stablecoin payments can be completed across borders in just a few seconds, but converting them into disposable local currencies remains a slower and more decentralized process. He pointed out that the stablecoin infrastructure has become a liquidity issue, as the same token performs different functions in trading and payments. Market makers hold stablecoins to quote buy and sell prices, while payment companies use stablecoins to fund conversions and then release the local currency to the recipients. Gravity Team's analysis found that traditional correspondent banks may retain 20% to 40% of their monthly transaction volume in pre-funded accounts. The company stated that stablecoins could reduce this amount of idle capital, provided that operators maintain sufficient local currency balances and adequate inventories to facilitate conversions.
