According to CoinMeta, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated at a press conference that the current conflicts in the Middle East and between Russia and Ukraine are having a severe impact on global trade, energy, and food supply by disrupting maritime shipping. The obstruction of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea, and the Black Sea has led to restricted transportation of essential goods such as oil, fertilizers, and food, resulting in a significant increase in oil prices, container freight rates, and fertilizer costs. This has further exacerbated global hunger and the difficulties faced by vulnerable groups. To address the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, the United Nations has established a working group that plans to set up a registration, verification, monitoring, and conflict de-escalation mechanism coordinated by the UN, with an initial focus on ensuring the transportation of fertilizers and related raw materials. This mechanism will not alter the sovereign rights of any country nor replace the political efforts required to restore freedom of navigation and resolve the conflicts, but it can serve as a practical first step towards reducing risks, ensuring the transportation of necessities, and rebuilding trust.
