According to CoinMeta, as trade tensions escalated, Trump stated that the United States "urgently needs" Canadian aluminum. He said, "This country urgently needs aluminum. Selfishly speaking, we in the United States need aluminum. We don't have enough of it. Most of our aluminum comes from Canada, and we need it very much." Trump also proposed building an "urgently needed" aluminum plant in Enola, Oklahoma, warning that if it wasn't approved, the plant would be moved elsewhere. Trump's remarks came at a time when U.S.-Canada trade disputes were intensifying, with a 50% tariff on metals becoming a focal point of contention. More than half of the aluminum consumed in the United States each year comes from Canada. Last week, the two sides were close to reaching an agreement to halve the aluminum tariffs, but Trump's administration faced opposition from the U.S. steel and aluminum industries, which urged the government to avoid making too many concessions to the Canadian market.
