According to CoinMeta, as reported by bitcoin.com and news, Tether has two mining facilities in the Florida province of Uruguay, with each facility investing 60 million US dollars, totaling about 120 million US dollars. There was a disagreement between Uruguay's state-owned power company UTE and Tether regarding the supply contract amount. As a result, Tether's Uruguayan entity Microfin stopped paying for electricity, and on July 25, 2025, the power supply to the mining facilities was cut off. UTE owed nearly 5 million US dollars, with monthly electricity costs amounting to about 2 million US dollars. On November 25, 2025, Tether notified the Uruguayan labor department to cease operations, and 30 out of 38 local jobs were eliminated. UTE stated that Microfin had settled its debts by December.
