According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Reuters, India plans to launch its first batch of tokenized corporate bonds next month, with an issuance size not exceeding 5 billion Indian rupees (about 57 million US dollars). The transactions and settlements will be conducted using the digital rupee through blockchain infrastructure. The state-owned power financing company REC will be the pilot for issuing these bonds, with the aim of testing whether distributed ledger technology can shorten the process of issuing, recording, and settling corporate debt. It is expected that these bonds will be unveiled during Mumbai's annual fintech event, and initially, participation will be limited to specific investors. Participants will need to have two digital accounts: one is a wholesale central bank digital currency wallet provided by a bank, and the other is a wallet for tokenized securities. The implementation of this project will bring new attempts to the issuance of corporate debt in India and is also part of a broader review of digital asset policies.
