According to CoinMeta, the attacker behind the $8.5M DAO heist managed to carry it out for just $951. The attacker purchased a controlling stake in the DAO governance tokens for less than $1,000 and then withdrew $8.5 million from the strategy treasury through a malicious proposal. This incident exposed vulnerabilities in most DeFi protocols that had not yet been patched.
