Reuters' parent company finds Claude too expensive: Spending $40 million to build its own large model, with the foundation coming from Qwen

According to CoinMeta, Thomson Reuters, the parent company of Reuters, announced an investment of approximately $40 million in developing its own large model Thomson, with plans to gradually take over some of the current tasks handled by Claude. This model is based on Snowdon, which was developed by a team from Imperial College London using Alibaba's Qwen. Thomson Reuters stated that Thomson will continue to use its own data, such as Westlaw, Practical Law, Checkpoint, and Reuters for training, and so far, less than 10% of the total data has been utilized. Thomson Reuters refers to relying on external models as "renting a property," suggesting that continuously paying fees without having control over the model's price and development direction is not ideal. Thomson Reuters' legal AI assistant CoCounsel currently mainly uses Claude, but plans to have Thomson take over more and more functions, starting with high-frequency tasks such as reviewing a large amount of documents.
