According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Department of Justice is coordinating with the Pentagon to reinstate a maritime “prize court” that has been dormant for a long time since World War II, in order to strengthen the blockade against Iran and offset the costs of the war. The federal prosecutor for the Southern District of Texas, Aaron Reitz, confirmed that the Department of Justice “is restarting” this ancient maritime legal mechanism. If the plan is implemented, after the U.S. military seizes oil tankers or goods supporting the enemy during the conflict, federal prosecutors will be able to more quickly designate such assets as U.S. property and sell them through this mechanism, with the proceeds transferred to the U.S. Treasury Department. The Department of Justice is considering having cases heard by the Federal Court for the Southern District of Texas, which is located in Houston. However, this mechanism has been rarely used since the Spanish-American War in 1898 and has been completely dormant since World War II. It is expected to face challenges such as whether the current conflict in the United States meets the conditions for applying the Prize Law, and whether seizures made without congressional authorization are legal.
