Iraq's crude oil export strategy changes: Buyers can receive goods outside of the Strait of Hormuz
2026-08-27 17:09:16
According to CoinMeta, Iraq is offering crude oil buyers for the first time the option to receive crude oil outside of the Persian Gulf, highlighting that despite the risks associated with the Strait of Hormuz, Iraq's crude oil exports remain resilient. Iraq's National Oil Marketing Organization is selling medium and heavy crude oil from Basra through bidding, and buyers will be able to receive it next month via ship-to-ship transfer near the coast of Oman. This marks a change in Iraq's strategy. After the conflict erupted, Iraq has been offering substantial discounts to attract traders and refineries to load their crude oil in the deeper waters of the Persian Gulf. It is not yet clear how Iraq plans to transport the crude oil out of the Persian Gulf, but several companies have helped Iraq deliver crude oil to global buyers during the war.
