Analysis of Differences in Customs Duty Refunds for Retailers
2026-08-30 20:18:55
According to CoinMeta, as reported by CNBC, recent tariff refunds have caused confusion in retailers' earnings reports. Most major retailers applied for refunds after the Supreme Court ruled that President Trump had no authority to impose tariffs, and these funds began to flow in during the second quarter, helping retailers offset cost inflation and increase profit margins. However, there are significant differences in how retailers report these refunds, leading to confusion in the market regarding their performance and future prospects. Home Depot received $730 million in tariff refunds in the second quarter and used about $685 million of it to reduce product costs. Walmart also plans to use approximately $2.9 billion in tariff refunds to lower consumer prices. In contrast, Lowe stated that its tariff refunds resulted in a 11-cent increase per share, but it does not plan to use the refunds to lower prices. Analysts point out that the way tariffs refunds are handled will have an impact on the coming quarters, especially if retailers predict that tariff rates will be higher than expected.
